Looking for an Encircle alternative for your home inventory
By the WhereKept team. Updated October 26, 2026.
Encircle is often listed as a free home inventory app. If you went looking for it recently, you may have found something aimed at a different reader. This page is from the people who make WhereKept, so read it with that in mind.
What Encircle describes today
As of October 2026, Encircle’s App Store listing calls it the field app built for restorers, and its website is about field documentation, scoping and estimates for restoration contractors. Its listing still mentions sharing jobs with homeowners, so if a restoration company is working on your house after a loss, you may well end up using it with them. That is a good use of it.
What it is not built around is the everyday question a household asks: where did we put it.
What a household inventory needs
- An address for every item. A house is a tree of places: room, cabinet, drawer, bin. Search should answer with a place you can walk to.
- Everyone in the house on the same list. When one person moves the drill, the next person should see where it went.
- A reason to open it more than once. An insurance list made once and never touched goes stale. A list you use to find things stays true, and the insurance list comes out of it.
What WhereKept does
You make the places once and put each item in its place. Search “passport” and the answer is Office, Desk, Top drawer. Print a QR label for a bin and scan it to see what is inside. Every add and every move is recorded with who did it. On WhereKept Plus the whole household shares one list on their own phones, and the insurance PDF groups everything by room with addresses, serial numbers, prices and photos.
What it does not do: Android, a web app, or estimating what things are worth. It is iPhone only and needs a connection.
Pick Encircle if
- You are a restoration contractor documenting jobs, floor plans and estimates.
- A restoration company is handling a claim on your house and has shared the job with you there.
Pick WhereKept if
- The question you actually ask is where is it, and you want an address back.
- More than one person in the house moves things and the list has to stay true.
- You want an insurance list that stays current because you use the same list every week.
- Everyone in the house is on an iPhone.
How the pieces fit together is in what a home inventory app should do. If you want the insurance list on paper first, start with the free home inventory checklist.

Questions
- Is Encircle still a home inventory app?
- Encircle is still free on the App Store, but as of October 2026 its listing calls it a field app built for restorers, and its website is written for restoration contractors. Homeowners still see it when a restoration company shares a job with them. Check getencircle.com for how they describe it today.
- Can I move my Encircle data to WhereKept?
- Not automatically. There is no import, so it means re-entering items. If you already have a long list in Encircle, keep a copy of it either way.
- Does WhereKept make an insurance list?
- Yes. Every plan exports a CSV for a spreadsheet. WhereKept Plus adds a PDF grouped by room with each item's address, serial number, price and photos. WhereKept does not estimate what anything is worth; it records what you enter.
- What does WhereKept cost?
- Free for 25 items and one person. WhereKept Plus is $19.99 a year or $2.99 a month for the whole household, with unlimited items, more photos per item, sharing, and the insurance PDF.
